National Crime Victimization Survey
Crimes against Persons Age 65 or Older, 1993-2002

This survey was compiled by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Statistics. The survey showed the following:

-When compared with other age groups, persons age 65 or older were disproportionately affected by property crimes.

-More than nine in ten crimes against the elderly and about four in ten crimes against persons age 12 to 24 were property crimes.

-About 46% of violent crimes and about 67% of property crimes against persons or households headed by persons age 65 or older occurred at or near their homes.

At some 86 million strong, the 50 and over segment is the fastest growing consumer segment in America today and represents more than 40 percent of the U.S. adult population. By 2020, their ranks will swell to more than 115 million people. According to AARP, more than 89 percent of those 50 and older want to remain in their current homes as they age.

-Question: What negative impact could result from the burglary or home invasion of a mature adult?

-Answer: They would very likely make the decision that they no longer feel safe living independently.

-Solution: Provide quality residential security education to mature adults in an effort to help them remain safe, secure and idependent.
